Product Description

Anoectochilus chapaensis Jewel Orchid (commonly known as the Yellow Flowered Jewel Orchid) is native to parts of China and Vietnam. Anoectochilus chapaensis is typically grown for its attractive dark green leaves with metallic golden/orange veining. It does bloom once or twice a year, but its small yellow flowers are not as showy as many other species of orchids. This orchid is grown for its unique foliage. The leaves have a velvety texture and the golden/orange veining sparkles when hit with light. It is called a 'jewel orchid' because of this veining that sparkles like a jewel. Anoectochilus chapaensis prefers temperatures between 60°F - 90°F and is one of the jewel orchids that do better in warmer conditions. Keep in moderate light. If the light is too intense, it may drop leaves. This plant grows best in New Zealand sphagnum moss and prefers damp (but not soggy!) substrate. Allow the moss to become almost dry before watering. Do not allow standing water on the leaves as this may cause damage to the foliage. Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplant: Anoectochilus chapaensis will do wonderfully well in a container or glass terrarium. It prefers humid environments and a glass terrarium will provide a perfect way to showcase this unique and beautiful orchid. Make sure not to place the terrarium in full sun as this will overheat and kill the plant. Place in indirect, bright light. Vivariums/Animal Terrariums: Anoectochilus chapaensis is a neat terrestrial jewel orchid that is completely suitable for use in a tropical vivarium. It is a terrestrial orchid and should be planted in the substrate in the foreground of the terrarium. It will grow from 6-12" and does not require air movement or ventilation as long as standing water is not present on its leaves. It will grow 4" leaves which provide shelter for a variety of animals, including poison dart frogs.
